FAQs
You may need a root canal if you experience tooth pain that is persistent, sensitivity to hot/cold drinks, pain with chewing or touching the tooth, swollen or tender gums, a pimple on your gums, or if the tooth darkens.
With today's techniques, root canal therapy is not painful. Dentists provide local anesthesia and use technology that allows you to have a comfortable experience. Discomfort is minimal and unexpected with today's root canal procedures.
Root canal costs depend on the location and complexity of the tooth. Typically, it is around $500 to $1,800. Dental insurance may cover costs, and out-of-pocket costs will vary by plan.
If you delay getting a root canal, you may develop a worse infection, increased pain, and possibly lose the tooth altogether. In extremely severe situations, the infection can travel into your body and affect your overall health.
It is not unusual for patients to have some discomfort after root canal treatment during the healing process, but if pain continues or worsens, consult with your dentist in case of further complications.
A crown isn’t always needed, but if it is a crown is often placed after a root canal to increase the strength of the tooth and restore the function of the tooth after a large portion of the tooth has been removed.
